Latest News ( 22 May 2012  )

Congratulations to Hyde School for winning this year's Dorset Schools League and overhauling Swanage Middle School after their performance at the final event of the League season at Moreton. and to Broadstone  Middle School & Clayesmore School for winning the team classes at the Schools Championships.

Congratulations also to the individual age group winners.

A word about the final league tables, which have been corrected (26/03/12) to remove a couple of errors. I've only included those individuals who scored in two or more events (although the points for those who only ran once still contributed to a school's team score)

My spreadsheet was written for a maximum of eight league events - this year we had nine, and rather than try to rewrite the whole thing, I've used empty slots in the grid, so if your final column already had a number in it, I've put the score in an empty slot, but coloured it blue.

The Schools League Trophy and medals for all age group winners were presented at the Prize-giving ceremony which took place after the Schools Championships at Moors Valley on Friday May 11th 2012.

The medals and prizes were co-presented by Lucy Butt & Jack Benham who have competed in the Schools League for the last 10 years or so and risen through the ranks to international level. Lucy made her debut for the full Great Britain team in the European Championships in Sweden three days after this picture was taken.

You will notice also that for this year, we are being kind to the White course runners, in that if they miss a control, we are giving them time penalties rather than disqualifying them.

WIM, WSX & SARUM all have have a Routegadget site, so you can draw the routes you ran on the map and compare them with other runners. If you haven't played with Routegadget before, try it - its great fun.

British Schools Score Championships  Beaulieu Oct 08

A number of Dorset Schools competed at the British Schools Score Championships at Beaulieu, with some very good performances from a number of our competitors.  There were Gold medals for class winners Lucy Butt (13G S Wilts) & Jack Benham (13B Burgate), and Silver medals for Lisa White (11G Trafalgar School,Downton), Beccy Whittingham (8G Sturminster) &  Bonny Greenfield & Caitlin Madgwick (5G Hyde Primary).

Harry Butt (Burgate) and Barney Huthwaite (Clayesmore) also put in fine performances, without gaining medals, being amongst the 10% of the runners who managed to visit all the controls within the time limit.  Clayesmore finished 5th in both the Senior Girls and Senior Boys team classes.

Particular congratulations must go to Bonny and Cate  as this was their first ever major event, after completing only a few small events beforehand.

The event was covered by the  BBC1 South Today programme, and Lucy and Jack were interviewed by weather presenter Alexis Green, who presented the medals and prizes.

Alexis ran for Clayesmore in the very early days of the Schools League and was good enough to represent the British Schools team in the ISF World Schools Championships in Latvia in 1998.

League Events

All events offer colour coded courses from White to at least Light Green + something for local adult club orienteers (either a Green, Blue or a Score course). Some events such as Galoppens offer the full range of colour coded courses, but schools competitors only use White to Green. Most events will offer SI punching, bagged & pre-marked maps (late-comers may find they have to use master maps if stocks of overprinted maps run short).

RULES

The Dorset Schools Orienteering League is run by Wimborne Orienteers in close co-operation with all the other local orienteering clubs (WSX, SARUM, SOC). It is open to anyone attending schools in Dorset, S Wilts, & W. Hants ( & indeed schools from the Isle of Wight & the Channel Islands may occasionally attend.)

There are usually about eight league events during the season (some years we manage nine) and we count the best 5 performances for each runner & each school. Points are awarded on a time basis: the winner in each school year group gets 100 points, subsequent runners get points according to the formula

points = 100 x winners time/your time

Pairs share the points. If you run down a course, you get half points. Younger runners on White shadowed by parents also get half points.

Competitors from the same school and on the same course should be separated by at least 3 minutes on the Start line.  Competitors starting at similar times and having similar split times will be deemed to be running as a pair and share the points.

Courses

White - Year 6 and below Girls & Boys

Yellow - Year 7 & 8 Girls & Boys

Orange - Year 9 & 10 Boys & Girls

Light Green - Year 11 Boys, Year 11 Girls

Green - Year 12+ Boys & Girls. If there is no Green course (perhaps because the area is too small or simple to support it), these year groups also run Light Green

Blue - Where these are available, older runners may also run this course and qualify for schools points.

If you run up a course, your scores are calculated from the performance of the course winners. If you are the leading runner on the course, points are calculated from your time ( eg at Clayesmore 2011, Alex Buck ( 7B Romsey) was the first boy to count on Orange, rather than the Yellow course he could have run, so he got the 100 points and any Year 9 & 10 Boys scores were calculated from his time. Harry Complin (10B Clay) ran down on Orange so got half points because his age group should be scored  on the Light Green course.

School teams acquire points by taking the best 4 performances per League event.

We try to notify all interested schools and  mail them at regular intervals, but details don't always get through to the right people. If you want to enter yourself or your school in the league, please e-mail the league administrator, Dick Keighley

Electronic  punching

With the help of a grant from Sport England, WIM  purchased a set of SI equipment for electronic punching together with notebook computers etc.  WSX have bought a similar set with their grant which means that working together we can cater for big events as well.  SARUM events use their new EMIT kit. SOC have their own EMIT equipment.

(WIM also have three SI Schools kits which are available for schools to use.  Orienteering is not only on the National Curriculum for PE but the SI equipment allows cross-curricular links to IT etc.)

Where possible, we  use electronic punching at most schools league events. We can't use it for all events - some areas like Bryanston are very public and with the control stations costing 8100 each we can't afford to lose any, so areas where we have had control vandalism in the past may still use control cards and pin punching.

E-cards for punching cost 28 or so to buy. WIM have got 150 cards for hire and we  allow schools to use them for free at league events . However schools should be aware that any lost cards must be paid for. At events using EMIT there is usually a small hire charge for the e-card
