Score Championships About 110 runners at this year's event, and whilst some schools brought fewer people than in previous years, this was counteracted by the presence of new schools including two or three who don't normally compete in the League. The most notable was the resurgence of Bishop Wordsworth GS. Twenty five years ago, they were one of the leading orienteering schools in the country but the group folded when the teacher responsible retired. This is the first time they've participated in the the championships, and they were back with a bang, beating Clayesmore Senior and Burgate, this year's new League winners. Clayesmore Prep, another group which has been fairly quiet of late, recaptured the Junior class which they hadn't won for a while.
All events offer colour coded courses from White to at least Light Green + something for local adult club orienteers (either a Green, Blue or a Score course). Some events such as Galoppens offer the full range of colour coded courses, but schools competitors only use White to Green. Most events will offer SI punching, bagged & pre-marked maps (late-comers may find they have to use master maps if stocks of overprinted maps run short). 2003 - 04 There were eight League events this season plus thye Championships and the results for all are available. 14 September WSX Galoppen, Culpepper's Dish - Results on the WSX website 12 October WIM Local event, Moors Valley Country Park 26 October WIM Galoppen, North Ringwood Forest 9 November WIM Local event, Hurn Forest 8 Feb WIM Local event, Godshill Results available 29 Feb SARUM Galoppen, Big Wood, Chicklade (results on the SARUM website) 7 March SWERVE Galoppen, Gare Hill, Maiden Bradley. RULES The Dorset Schools Orienteering League is run by Wimborne Orienteers in close co-operation with all the other local orienteering clubs (WSX, SARUM, SOC). It is open to anyone attending schools in Dorset, S Wilts, & W. Hants ( & indeed schools from the Isle of Wight & the Channel Islands may occasionally attend.) There are usually about 8 league events during the season and we count the best 5 performances for each runner & each school. Points are awarded on a time basis: the winner in each school year group gets 100 points, subsequent runners get points according to the formula points = 100 x your time/winners time Pairs share the points. If you run down a course, you get half points. Younger runners on White shadowed by parents also get half points. Courses White - Year 6 and below Girls & Boys Yellow - Year 7 Girls & Boys and Year 8 Girls Orange - Year 8 & 9 Boys and Year 9 & 10 Girls Light Green - Year 10 & 11 Boys, Year 11 Girls Green - Year 12+ Boys & Girls. If there is no Green course (perhaps because the area is too small or simple to support it), these year groups also run Light Green If you run up a course, your scores are calculated from the performance of the course winners. If you are the leading runner on the course, points are calculated from your time ( eg at Rockford in Sept 2000, Stefanie Blomquist (8G) was the first girl on Light Green so she gets the 100 points and the Years 10 & 11 Girls scores are calculated from her time. Alice Butt (6G) ran up on Orange but wasn't the first girl home - her scores are calculated from the winner's time.) School teams acquire points by taking the best 4 performances per League event. We try to notify all interested schools and mail them at regular intervals, but details don't always get through to the right people. If you want to enter yourself or your school in the league, please e-mail the league administrator, Dick Keighley
SI punching With the help of a grant from Sport England, WIM have purchased a set of SI equipment for electronic punching together with notebook computers etc. At the moment we have about 50 punching stations which means that we can use the equipment for small events and hire extra boxes for major events like Badge & Galoppen events. WSX have bought a similar set with their grant which means that working together we can cater for big events as well. Larger SARUM events tend to use the WIM & WSX kit. (WIM also intend to use some of the equipment in local schools. Orienteering is not only on the National Curriculum for PE but the SI equipment allows cross-curricular links to IT etc.) Where possible, we use SI punching at most schools league events . We can't use it for all events - some areas like Bryanston are very public and with the control stations costing £60 each we can't afford to lose any, so areas where we have had control vandalism in the past may still use conventional punching. E-cards for punching cost £17or so to buy or 50p/event to hire. WIM have got 200 cards for hire and we allow schools to use them for free at league events and we are considering fitting extra wrist straps on them to make them difficult to mislay in the forest. However schools should be aware that any lost cards must be paid for.
