A note from the results team.

These are the final results, which will appear on your doormat in printed form relatively soon. We hope we have corrected most of the typos ( we had no time to check on Sunday). We have also inserted clubs which weren't in our archive, like GRAMP, EBOR & DVO, which appeared as 'none' in the original results. We had to do this because halfway through the event the program refused to create new clubs into our list, so we had to allot you to 'none' and edit it later.

We hope we have also found the two or three people who disappeared from the initial results because they 'dibbed' in the mini printer box which we reserved for the hired SI cards and which printed out splits but wasn't connected to the computer network. These runners had their own cards and should have downloaded into the download boxes.

Once things became slightly less fraught we were able to 'dib' the hired cards back into the system at quieter times, so that everyone was then in the computer before we produced any results. Unfortunately, if you had your own SI card and didn't download into the computer we had no record of you finishing until we could interrogate the Start and Finish boxes and find  your times from there.

We also must thank BOK, for the use of their equipment and especially Mike Nelson for his technical advice and assistance with the system both before and during the day.

Cris Tween & Dick Keighley

If you want to see the split times then click here to download the splits for all competitors ( these are uncorrected for typos and don't have the lost names, but, hey, you can't have everything!)

GALLOPEN & COLOUR CODED EVENT

BOVINGTON RANGES

October 15th 2000

ORGANISER’S COMMENTS

Thrown into the trenches !

When we, as three younger members of Wimborne Club and our supportive parents, were asked to help with an orienteering event we did not realise that we would end up organising a South Western Gallopen using the Sport Ident system for the first time in Dorset. Little did we realise how much organising an event takes, or how it has to be done in a particular way. However with the help of many members of Wimborne Club we believe the day has been a success. We would like to thank everyone who has worked so hard to assist us in making this possible. Cris Tween and Dick Keighley need a special mention for their computer skills. We would also like to thank the planner for his support, and to highlight that as a father with a young baby and a demanding job he has given so much to make this event memorable. Thanks also go to Captain Goddard of Bovington Camp for helping us in so many ways and holding back his tanks for the day. David Bland as controller was also both helpful and hard working, characteristics much appreciated by everyone.

Claire Halliwell, Nathan and Jenny Fairhurst.

PLANNER’S COMMENTS

First of all, my thanks to Captain Goddard and the Army for their co-operation throughout the planning of this event. The area has much to offer the orienteer and their help in allowing us to use it is much appreciated.

Mapping and planning can be quite interesting on the ranges. It only takes an hour or two to completely change a small area with a tank! Perhaps the most dramatic example here was towards the end of the white and yellow courses. In the first plans we even considered tapes between controls because a path was difficult to see. On the next visit it was about 4 metres wide and filled with stones. On the next visit a temporary wall had appeared across the track junction! Such changes occurred elsewhere on the area but were either less dramatic or away from the routes on the more senior courses.

This was my first (and last for some time! ) go at planning. I therefore needed much guidance from David Bland and John Warren. John was going to stay out of this one, until a quick single stroke during the last cricket match of the season culminated in my hamstring tearing. That was a few days before tagging was due, so many thanks to the Johns (Warren and Bush) for doing the tagging for me and making the necessary adjustments to the courses. I was already behind schedule at that stage because of difficulties getting access to the ranges at times when I was available, so without their help I really don’t know what would have happened.

I hope that you enjoyed the challenge of Bovington. Not an easy area at times. Although paths, tracks and even roads are always an option on longer legs (and I know many of you chose that option probably thinking of the amount of rain that fell in the two weeks leading up to the event) it is still easy to become disorientated because many of the areas look alike. Keeping in touch with the map is important over those sandy tank-tracks. Anyway, those competitors that found me at the end made some favorable comments so hopefully they reflected the thoughts of the majority.

Electronic punching brings a new concept to the sport in that the finish is a ‘control’ that needs visiting. I know that some of you ran straight from the ‘last’ control (numbered) to the download tent. The view of some tapes and a tent was an oasis maybe, but you were told to navigate to the finish and that was marked with a double circle on the map. I can assure you that this was not set as a trap. I may well have done the same thing if I were a competitor at the end of a long hard run, but the next time we use electronic punching I am sure that we will have learnt from the frustration on the part of those who had to rush back to the finish.

Finally, well done to the organisers. They, like me, were novices but everything appeared to run fairly smoothly on the day and they deserve credit for that. I hope they didn’t fall asleep in lessons the next morning.

CONTROLLER’S COMMENTS

For a Galoppen Wimborne put on a very innovative event with Electronic punching- (OK- BOK beat you by a week!), pre-marked maps and organisation by two families – the Fairhursts and the Halliwells led by their junior members Nathan and Claire. Thanks to them for all their efforts. Thanks are also due to Jenny for her String course and to Cris Tween and Dick Keighley for ensuring that the technology worked on the day.

Andy, who was planning a full event for the first time, produced courses that were both varied and challenging. Those who I spoke to seemed to enjoy them although finding the going rather tough in parts. Results show that this was particularly true for Light Green while the Blue course could possibly have been about 10% shorter.

Some runners on the Brown and Blue courses were confused at the end of their course, heading for the tapes and download tent. This is one aspect of electronic punching that needs to be adjusted to, - that the normal finish paraphernalia is not necessarily at the Finish station. The description sheet clearly said ‘navigate to Finish’ and as this was clearly marked on the map I am satisfied that there was no element of unfairness.

Thank you Wimborne for putting on an enjoyable event and to whoever was responsible for keeping the rain away from this part of Dorset.

David Bland (WEYOR)
