Organiser's Comments.
This was the first time I'd organised an event so I found it quite nerve wracking for the weeks beforehand. In the end, two factors meant that my fears turned to nothing on the day. The first was the beautiful weather that we had leading up to the event meant that the forest track used for car parking dried up very well. The weather also made the task of preparing the site and putting out the controls a real pleasure and we were able to appreciate the beautiful woods in the sunshine.
The second factor was the great team effort by the club members who helped before and during the event. I suppose I hadn't realised the enormous amount of work required to put on an event like this and the stalwarts in the club who do so much behind the scenes. Many thanks to everyone and, in particular, to John Warren who helped and guided me so much despite having his own planning job to do. My thanks also to members of other clubs who helped on the day, to John and Di Tilsley from WEYOR and John Cook from WSX who provided First Aid cover. (Fortunately there was only one customer)
The main aim of our efforts is for you to enjoy yourselves and I very much hope that we achieved that aim.
Now that I've done one event, I'm raring to do another,……. But not for at least five years!
Richard Brightman.
Planner's Comments
'That was a tough course' - 'What a beautiful forest' - The course seemed a bit long' - ' I really enjoyed my run.'!. Having spent much of the day standing in the 'firing line' by the Download tent, these are typical of the comments made to me about your impressions of the event. Orienteering is a very individual sport with each of us having our own criteria as to what makes an enjoyable experience so planning has to be somewhat of a compromise. Whatever your result a look at the Badge times illustrates the difficulties of meeting everyone's aspirations. Most of the times are close to the BOF recommendations, but for the very fit leaders on the long courses, the course length could have been regarded as a little short. The more average competitors probably would have another view! But I hope that overall you had what you would regard as a 'Nice Day Out'!
The weather can only be described as wonderful. Having been both surveying and planning in the woods since October I began to believe that they were entirely a morass of mud and unpleasant slippery brashings. Constantly enduring torrential rain, and culminating in a day in December when the whole of the valley from entrance to assembly was a swiftly flowing stream with the site of the 'return crossing' control 124 under water in a sizeable lake!
The use of electronic punching, which makes 'crossovers' possible, allowed for many more planning opportunities within a rather restricted area, and although the location of the start and finish in Ashmore Wood meant the use of a linear car park with a long walk to Assembly, I hope that it also meant that you were able to enjoy some of the best of the forest without the very big climbs in Fontmell Wood.
On you behalf, I would like to thank Dudley Budden for his role as an ever efficient, positive Controller, and a team of helpers who built large 'hides', put out control stakes and boxes, and other club members who willingly volunteered to collect them after wards. To John Bush, John Shuckamith and most of all to Richard Brightman, who not only acted as Organiser, but also put out a large number of controls my grateful thanks
John Warren
Controller's Comments
First The map. There is little to say, as I never heard any comments at all on the day, and therefore assume that from a competitor's point of view the colours and printing were perfectly acceptable. It shows how far we have progressed in a relatively short time.
Next the terrain. The decision to use Ashmore Wood for the shorter courses was an excellent decision, eliminating excessive climb and providing a variation from the previous event. The problem though is that there are less usable features, hence the building of hides to compensate.
And the Courses. The steep valleys help to break up the area and provide a challenge to fitness and navigation. I spent time in the forest watching to see how you coped with route choice from going direct to cutting out the climb. My conclusions are that the majority of people prefer the straight route. I also observed that the brashings that were present had a much greater effect on the ladies and the older classes. This is apparent when they are descending steep slopes as well as on the flat. This is reflected in the results , I believe, and is partly due the fact that by careful planning the competitor was encouraged to navigate through the forest.
Results. From my previous comments, I would say that we slightly misjudged the ability of the older and less fit competitors to cope with the terrain. However, I did not hear any real adverse comments and therefore can only conclude that you enjoyed your time in the woods. The comments forthcoming were that it was tough, but I think you will agree with me that it was fair. This probably means that I will be lynched at the next event I show up at, but you'll have to catch me first.
Lastly the thanks. On behalf of the competitors I would like to thank Wimborne for allowing me the privilege of being involved in the event. A lot of effort went into the event from many people and therefore it seems unfair to single out particular people. However, without John and Barbara, Richard, Dick and Cris, my job would have been so much harder, and therefore |I would like to offer them thanks on your behalf. Wimborne members are always there at the end ready to collect in controls and this event was no different. Well done Wimborne. You almost made the Controller redundant.
