After the final league event of the season, the League tables have been updated. Congratulations to the individual age group winners and to Swanage Middle School, this year's league winner, ahead of South Wilts GS and last year's champions, Burgate.  The trophy and medals were presented at the Score Championships at Moors Valley.

The annual Schools Score Championships were held on Friday May 16th at Moors Valley. Many thanks to Chris Turner (Planner) and John Warren (Organiser) and all the volunteer officials from Wimborne Orienteers who made the event such a success.

With just over 100 children competing either singly or in pairs the attendance was slightly up on recent years and we welcome one or two new schools to the competitions. Only four competitors found all 24 controls and got back within the hour. Congratulations to our individual prizewinners and to Burgate School and Swanage Middle School, who won the team competitions.

British Schools Championships, Bovington  Dorset   November 17 2007

Congratulations to all those athletes who took part in the British Schools Championships  despite the horrendous weather conditions on the Sunday.

In particular, congratulations should go to Tom Butt (BWS), Lucy Butt (SWilts), & Jack Benham (Burgate), whose performances over the weekend, not just at the Championships but on the Saturday at the Gore Heath Selection Race, have gained them selection for the English team taking part in the World Schools Championships, to be held in Scotland in April. Also selected was Julia Blomquist, who used to run in the Dorset Schools League. Sam Giles (BWS) has also been nominated as a reserve. Jack & Julia are both British Schools Champions.

Another notable performances at Bovington came from Alice Butt (S Wilts), who won Girls 13 by a huge margin. Alice's performance at this summer's European Youth Championships earned her special congratulations at the recent British Squad's awards ceremony.

The League also had a winning school team. Clayesmore School retained their title in the small schools class at the Schools Champs, the 7th time in the last 10 years that they have won this award.

League Events

All events offer colour coded courses from White to at least Light Green + something for local adult club orienteers (either a Green, Blue or a Score course). Some events such as Galoppens offer the full range of colour coded courses, but schools competitors only use White to Green. Most events will offer SI punching, bagged & pre-marked maps (late-comers may find they have to use master maps if stocks of overprinted maps run short).

2007 - 08

There are normally eight events over the school year, with only one event, plus the score championships, in the summer term. As there may be a number of schools trying to train up novice orienteers before the British Schools at Bovington, I listed all suitable events here, with Dorset Schools League fixtures in bold

Sept 30 - WIM Galoppen at Bovington North Schools League 1 - note that this was a different area to that  used at the British Schools Champs

Oct 7- Bulford Ranges. In conjunction with an Army Cadet events.

Oct 21 - WSX Regional event at Shillingstone - Schools League 3 T

Nov 16/17 - British Schools weekend ( I have extracted Dorset Schools performances from the Sunday for the league - Dorset Schools League 4)

Dec 2 SOC event, Burley     Dorset Schools 5

Spring Term

Feb 02 (Sat) Sarum event, Vernditch. More details on Sarum website

Mar 03 - Godshill, New Forest. Details here

RULES

The Dorset Schools Orienteering League is run by Wimborne Orienteers in close co-operation with all the other local orienteering clubs (WSX, SARUM, SOC). It is open to anyone attending schools in Dorset, S Wilts, & W. Hants ( & indeed schools from the Isle of Wight & the Channel Islands may occasionally attend.)

There are usually about 8 league events during the season (some years we manage nine) and we count the best 5 performances for each runner & each school. Points are awarded on a time basis: the winner in each school year group gets 100 points, subsequent runners get points according to the formula

points = 100 x winners time/your time

Pairs share the points. If you run down a course, you get half points. Younger runners on White shadowed by parents also get half points.

Courses (amended this year to fall in with British School standards)

White - Year 6 and below Girls & Boys

Yellow - Year 7 & 8 Girls & Boys

Orange - Year 9 & 10 Boys & Girls

Light Green - Year 11 Boys, Year 11 Girls

Green - Year 12+ Boys & Girls. If there is no Green course (perhaps because the area is too small or simple to support it), these year groups also run Light Green

Blue - Where these are available, older runners may also run this course and qualify for schools points

If you run up a course, your scores are calculated from the performance of the course winners. If you are the leading runner on the course, points are calculated from your time ( eg at Shillingstone 2007,Peter Taylor (Swan 8B) was the first boy on Orange, rather than the Yellow course he could have run, so he got the 100 points and any Year 9 & 10 Boys scores were calculated from his time. Emma Spring  (S Wilts  11G) ran down on Orange so got half points because her age group should be scored  on the Light Green course.

School teams acquire points by taking the best 4 performances per League event.

We try to notify all interested schools and  mail them at regular intervals, but details don't always get through to the right people. If you want to enter yourself or your school in the league, please e-mail the league administrator, Dick Keighley

Electronic  punching

With the help of a grant from Sport England, WIM  purchased a set of SI equipment for electronic punching together with notebook computers etc. At the moment we have about 50 punching stations which means that we can use the equipment for small events and borrow extra  boxes for major events like Regional & Galoppen events. WSX have bought a similar set with their grant which means that working together we can cater for big events as well.  SARUM events use their new EMIT kit. SOC have their own EMIT equipment.

(WIM also also three SI Schools kits which are available for schools to use.  Orienteering is not only on the National Curriculum for PE but the SI equipment allows cross-curricular links to IT etc.)

Where possible, we  use electronic punching at most schools league events. We can't use it for all events - some areas like Bryanston are very public and with the control stations costing £60 each we can't afford to lose any, so areas where we have had control vandalism in the past may still use control cards and pin punching.

E-cards for punching cost £22 or so to buy. WIM have got 200 cards for hire and we  allow schools to use them for free at league events and we are considering fitting extra wrist straps on them to make them difficult to mislay in the forest. However schools should be aware that any lost cards must be paid for. At events using EMIT there is usually a small hire charge for the e-card

Season 2006-7

League

Congratulations to Burgate School on their victory in the league. South Wilts GS were again second, with the small but consistent team from Colfox, Bridport coming third and pushing last year's champions, Blandford School, into fourth position.

All trophies and age group medals were presented at the Schools Championships at Moors Valley on May 11th

Score Championships

There were some excellent performances at the 2007 score championships - there were initially over 100 entries, well up on the last couple of years, but unfortunately two schools were unable to come because staff illness on the day meant they had no one to drive their minibus! The first six home scored maximum points with Tom Butt being the fastest runner overall.

In the team competition, where we take the best four performances from a schools team, Hale were the winners, with Swanage Middle School fairly close behind them, whilst the Secondary Schools competition resulted in a tie for first place, with Burgate and South Wilts GS level on points. With their star runner Emily Benham missing, unable to compete because of an ankle injury sustained at the British Championships the previous week, this was a strong team showing by Burgate, whilst for South Wilts, Alice Butt, who has missed most of the season through injury, was their strongest performer and the leading girl overall.

Afterwards, the prizes and medals were again presented by our junior internationals, Alice and Emily,

Team winners from Hale Primary, South Wilts GS and Burgate School at the prizegiving
