Latest News ( 08 May 2015)

The Dorset Schools Championships and League prizegiving were held at Moors Valley On Friday May 8th. The results are here. Congratulations to  the individual Age Group medallists and to Clayesmore School and St Michaels'  Middle School, Colehill, who won the Senior and Middle/Junior school team competitions.

League Fixtures The final league event was held this weekend at Stonebarrow.

Congratulations to our individual class winners, particularly those with the maximum 500 points, and also to Sturminster High School (the Whittingham family!) for winning the League for the first time.

Congratulations to Clayesmore School, who won the Small Senior Schools Trophy at the British Schools Championships at Temple Newsam, nr Leeds on Sun 16th November. Barney Huthwaite, currently leading our B13 table, was the best performer on the day, in 5th place in B13.

 League Events

All events offer colour coded courses from White to at least Light Green + something for local adult club orienteers (either a Green, Blue or a Score course).

Some events such as Galoppens or Regionals offer the full range of colour coded courses, but schools competitors should normally only use White to Green. Most events will offer electronic punching & pre-marked waterproof maps .

A reminder that a runner's best five performances count towards the league, so  if you miss an event or have a bad run early on, you have chances to make up your points later in the season. The league tables will eventually show scores after all events, and show totals for the best five scores over the season: please check to make sure I've got your scores correct.

RULES

The Dorset Schools Orienteering League is run by Wimborne Orienteers in close co-operation with all the other local orienteering clubs (WSX, SARUM, SOC). It is open to anyone attending schools in Dorset, S Wilts, & W. Hants ( & indeed schools from the Isle of Wight & the Channel Islands may occasionally attend.)

There are usually about eight league events during the season (some years we manage nine) and we count the best 5 performances for each runner & each school. Points are awarded on a time basis: the winner in each school year group gets 100 points, subsequent runners get points according to the formula

points = 100 x winners time/your time

Pairs share the points. If you run down a course, you get half points. Younger runners on White shadowed by parents also get half points.

Competitors from the same school and on the same course should be separated by at least 3 minutes on the Start line.  Competitors starting at similar times and having similar split times will be deemed to be running as a pair and share the points.

As we did last year, we are being kind to the White course runners, in that if they miss a control, we are giving them time penalties rather than disqualifying them.

Courses

White - Year 6 and below Girls & Boys

Yellow - Year 7 & 8 Girls & Boys

Orange - Year 9 & 10 Boys & Girls

Light Green - Year 11 Boys, Year 11 Girls

Green - Year 12+ Boys & Girls. If there is no Green course (perhaps because the area is too small or simple to support it), these year groups also run Light Green

Blue - Where these are available, older runners may also run this course and qualify for schools points.

If you run up a course, your scores are calculated from the performance of the course winners. If you are the leading runner on the course, points are calculated from your time ( eg at Clayesmore 2011, Alex Buck ( 7B Romsey) was the first boy to count on Orange, rather than the Yellow course he could have run, so he got the 100 points and any Year 9 & 10 Boys scores were calculated from his time. Harry Complin (10B Clay) ran down on Orange so got half points because his age group should be scored  on the Light Green course.

School teams acquire points by taking the best 4 performances per League event.

We try to notify all interested schools and  mail them at regular intervals, but details don't always get through to the right people. If you want to enter yourself or your school in the league, please e-mail the league administrator, Dick Keighley

Electronic  punching

With the help of a grant from Sport England, WIM  purchased a set of SI equipment for electronic punching together with computers etc.  WSX also bought a similar set with their grant which means that working together we can cater for big events as well.  SARUM events use their EMIT kit. SOC have their own EMIT equipment.

(WIM  have three SI Schools kits which are available for schools to use.  Orienteering is not only on the National Curriculum for PE but the SI equipment allows cross-curricular links to IT etc.)

Where possible, we  use electronic punching at all schools league events.

E-cards for punching cost £35 or so to buy. WIM have got 100 cards for hire and we  allow schools to use them for free at league events . However schools should be aware that any lost cards must be paid for. At events using EMIT there is usually a small hire charge for the e-card

My spreadsheet was written for a maximum of eight league events - in some years we have nine, and rather than try to rewrite the whole thing, I used empty slots in the grid, so if your final column already had a number in it, I've put the score in an empty slot.
