Ringwood North Gallopen and Colour Coded Event
Organiser’s Comments
Thank you to my team of helpers who
despite being depleted by half term holidays and KIMM, coped magnificently with
the unexpectedly large entry. The
weather was excellent (fortunately not KIMM weather), and we were pleased to
see quite a number of SEOA competitors.
I had thought that, as fixtures secretary, I had made an error putting
the event on that weekend and that the turnout would be relatively small. Thank you therefore for being so good
humoured and patient, particularly the Blue Course competitors, who either had
to wait for a map or were asked to give up their maps after their run to allow
others to compete. Please let me know if
you did not leave your details and want a replacement map sending on. Finally, thank you to the Bolton Family for designing
and running the String Course.
John Shucksmith.

Planner’s Comments.
This was my first attempt at planning
anything as big as a colour coded gallopen and the
first where I was supervised by a controller.
It was altogether a very pleasant experience, all the more so because
Richard Arman controlled me very gently and thanks to
him one or two errors were avoided.
Ringwood North has the advantage from
the orienteering point of view of a complex path network with areas of
significant contour detail. Its
disadvantage is of many blocks of quite unpleasant furrows and undergrowth. Bracken appeared to be a very serious problem
when planning; often dense and above my head it precluded the use of many
control features that the armchair observer might consider ideal. In the event the long hot summer extending
into autumn with night frosts weakened the bracken considerably. It also gave the leaves of the deciduous
trees within the forest – you will have noticed as you drove in and out – the
most wonderful array of autumnal colours.
Some of you came great
distances. A bus of
Times taken were generally a little
longer than I expected and at the top end of recommended but I hope that you
felt you had good value and it was worth the journey.
The Blue course was oversubscribed.
My top estimate of 66 was well surpassed and hence the request to blue
finishers to recycle maps. Your
generosity of spirit is much appreciated and we will happily print and send you
copies at your request.
I included a Red course to encourage
those who run but have not yet found the joys of orienteering, to get off the
tarmac and have a taster. Local running
clubs received publicity and certainly there were some first timers on the
course. The winner certainly was.
The putting out of controls and to a
lesser degree the collecting in are arduous tasks largely because of time
constraints. The risk of vandalism and
the expense of electronic units means we cannot afford
to put out too early and need to collect in soon after the event. We lost no electronics but did have one
control vandalised the night before.
My sincere thanks
to the Branford family, Chris, Lynn and Simon for their considerable help and
to the other Wimborne members who collected in equipment.
To you the customers thank you for coming, especially in such numbers.
Keith Henderson.
Controller’s Comments
Keith made my job easy by planning
such good courses to make the best use of the area bearing in mind its many
track options. Timings seem to confirm that
the course lengths/climbs were really pretty good.
The small team of Wimborne stalwarts
ran the event without any major problems.
It was a pity that the great turnout meant that we ran out of maps on
some courses, but this was overcome, and the delinquent computer set up only
played up a the last minute without affecting the entrants.
Two competitors got seriously lost on
several occasions having clearly opted for courses that were way above their
navigational standards. It seems hard
for a ‘runner’ to believe that five kilometres is likely to be too far if you
have little or no experience of orienteering.
Ringwood Forest North became at last
a likeable place with its first 1:10000 map which I feel sure everyone
appreciated, and its not just the ‘oldies’ that like the bigger scale. 350+ entrants all enjoyed the sunshine and
hopefully the courses too. The string
course was just great, - I tried it never having done
one before in my life.
Well done Wimborne.
Richard Arman
(WessexOC).
SI Team Comments.
We were
using our new wireless network for the first time—not without teething
problems. These thankfully have been overcome.
We
apologise to the two late starters (Jane Archer and Peter Bray) who have no
splits. This happened because we read their SI numbers incorrectly as they
registered and as the network was down we did not realize this at the time. It
was too difficult to reconstruct their courses.
Of the
three people who lost their dibbers we did not feel able for 2 of them to
reconstruct the parts of their courses that they punched correctly. However,
Pete Maliphant (BOK) retraced his steps and punched his map and we were able to
give him a running time.
To the
late finishers, using the SI Thermal printer we were able to read in your
splits when the wireless network let us down.
Thanks
also to our two typists, Kate and Jason.
It made for a more relaxed event for us
