Another Furrow Hoppers and another memorable area. I hope that everyone enjoyed their day at Sandy Balls whether it be ‘fast and furious’ or more ‘leisured’ enjoyment of the scenic, if physical little area. I’m only sorry that we couldn’t supply the usual sunshine for the assembly area which is often a real sun trap. Thank you all for coming, in some cases very long distances to what I think of as a summer social event with orienteering intervals! The variety of terrain in a very small area makes Sandy Balls ideal for small scale relays and by using unique control sites for all but the final control you had to keep your wits about you even on the third circuit. The handicap system worked very well with real excitement as the leading teams completed their courses within seconds of each other.

Wimborne Orienteers are very grateful to SOC for allowing us to use Sandy Balls for the event and also to Sandy Balls Estate for giving us free access and parking for the event. After all the event expenses have been paid, we expect to send a donation of about £200 to the Woodland Trust in memory of Lubor Velecky who first mapped the area and was a regular and enthusiastic competitor in the Furrow Hoppers.

My thanks also go to Kirsty Staunton and Kevin Pickering for forming a team which allowed me to juggle the roles of Organiser, Planner and Controller, and also to the Registration and Results team who had to revive the skills of manual checking control cards after over a year of SI. Maybe next year someone will crack the problem of using electronics for a Relay of this type.
