This was my first crack at planning a regional event, and I remained undaunted even when my co-planner listened to the views of the first finishers and immediately left the country! My aim was to give everyone a good mixture of terrain and techniques with a final challenge in the complex marines explosives area – the sting in the tail. All senior courses were within 250m of BOF ratios based on M21L and some of the times were surprisingly quick: no doubt you were spurred to extreme efforts by the occasional driving sleet squalls! Later competitors had the best of the weather. It was rewarding to hear so many positive comments and know that most had enjoyed their run and found it physically and mentally stimulating.

Although very little went awry, there were a couple of small issues. First, very recent felling in one area was missed, though fortunately the runners on those courses were experienced enough to know the signs. I apologise if anyone was disconcerted by it. Second, the description for control 638 would have better read simply ‘Re-entrant’. The attempt to give location detail was counter-productive – a lesson in brevity.

My thanks go to John Parfitt, who controlled proceedings with a careful touch, and Tim Britton, who made a thoroughly professional job of organising his first event. A special vote of thanks must go to Kirsty Staunton who not only planned the junior and novice courses but also gave me invaluable advice and support in the detail of the senior courses. Lastly, the Wimborne helpers – what a smoothly effective team they are! Thank you – the operation has been a pleasure.
